Welcome to 2008 at Wit's End Growers. Lets just start out by saying 2007 was a great year, a year of transition and change, voluntary and involuntary. We spent much of 2007 working on our home and barn here at Wit's End Farm, and my daughter and I learned a lot about construction, demolition and rebuilding in the process (with the patient advisement of our contractor.) Our labor has paid off and we are enjoying our new and improved surroundings.

My daugher and I took another wonderful trip to Guatemala. We spent some time in the jungle and Tikal's ancient Mayan ruins were magical. We had spectacular sunset dinners on the shores of Lake Peten Itza. On such a night with a light breeze whiffling the lake surface I made a routine call home to check in and learned that our stock greenhouse had fallen prey to the freeze that was enveloping the northeast. Both furnaces failed as well as the alarm system! Greeting the New Year with an enforced reduction of plant material, I have a new appreciation for some of my old favorite plants. Who knew that so many plants would actually survive prolonged freezing temperatures? However, the losses were great in the Coleus department. I've tried to sub for some of the favorites and I've added some new colors to try out.

It's all about flexability here, tearing down to rebuild again, being able to go with the flow or simply know when to push through or let go. Although things are looking alittle rough on the economic horizon we're keeping the faith, remember, a world without the beauty of a newly opened flower would be a dismal place. Plants contribute a vast amount of beauty and grace for a minimal investment! Here's to a 2008 full of beauty!

We plant people are optimists, each year offers us an opportunity to try something different, to get to know a favorite plant in a new situation or to experiment with a color and textural combination. We are so fortunate in this country to have the resources to enjoy our landscapes beyond the necessity of food production. Let go, experiment freely and be grateful!

At Wit’s End our mission is to explore and enjoy this rich world of horticulture, bringing successful ornamental crops and different ways to use them to the discerning public. Please take some time and explore the website. This is a great way to see the material in color and to show your clients some new ideas. Feel free to call or email me to consult on any design or growing problems you may be facing. I have returned to the design board and am happy to offer full landscape design services, as complex and detailed or as fast and simple as you wish. The best time for me to give you full attention is in summer, fall and winter. Wit's End is happy to custom grow if you have any special requests. This service has been especially useful for our estate gardeners looking for larger plants and for special occasions and displays. If you have some special needs please give us plenty of advance notice so we can schedule accordingly.

Many thanks go out to my expanding team of employees, customers, family, friends, and colleagues who make this business possible. When you are at your wit’s end looking for the best in the world of plants or a new, creative approach to design, I want you to think of us.

Thank You! Ellen Mitchell
